I am in the process of completing my pre-reqs for nursing school and hope to apply to programs that would start in the spring or fall of 2010.
Today on WBEZ (NPR) in Chicago, the dean from Loyola's Nursing School spoke about the "nursing shortage", but at the same time mentioned that of the 12,000 applicants they had last year, only 100 were accepted.
This rejection of 11,900 applicants makes me very nervous about my chances of getting in to Loyola's ABSN program or other programs in Chicago.
Are there other Chicago nursing students who read this board who could reply to this thread and speak a little bit about your nursing school applications (GPA, previous health-care experience etc.)?
I had a 3.8 GPA in undergrad at Loyola, and so far have 4.0 in all my nursing pre-reqs. Despite these good grades, I am super paranoid that I won't get in to any programs. 11,900 rejections is huge. Surely there were applicants in that group who had grades similar to mine.
Thanks!

I can't really tell you about Loyola's ABSN program, but as an undergrad at loyola I got into the nursing program after my 1st semester. My advisor told me about how hard it is to get into the program and so forth since I did not apply to the school to go into the nursing program, but low and behold after all the negative things she told me I got in w/ a 3.3 GPA and having a withdrawl from my chem class. I think a lot of universities try to be negative about people's chances getting in due to the fact that, I'm sure, there are tons of applicants, but you have to remember that several of those applicants simply aren't qualified or have the grades, and there are some applicants that are highly superior (but that is most likely about 10-20% of the total applicants), and the rest are probably just normal kids who have a good GPA and stand a good chance. Good luck, I hope you get in!

Ya know, there's a whole forum devoted to IL Nursing Programs under the "Region" tab. Why don't you poke around there and read up on DePaul's MENP program, UIC's GEP, Rush's GEM, West Surburban's BSN-MSN program, and all the other nursing schools in Chicago in the great-but-broke State of Illinois?
