No stop date?

Nurses Medications

Published

Hi! I had a question that recently came up at work. A pt. was given an order to receive 2 eye gtts meds due to seasonal allergies/irritation. When the order was transcribed by the nurse it didn't state a stop date by the prescriber or any instructions when to stop getting the eye drops. When we notified the MD about discontinuing them, they were upset because they both were to stop within a week or two. The original order came in over 2 months ago and the resident has been refusing to receive the gtts for over 3 weeks anyway due to symptoms being resolved. My question is, who is at fault? Pt. is fine but MD still has not sent in d/c orders after requesting. Thanks for any advice!

MD needs to provide complete prescription including stop date if indicated.
