amoxicillin

Nurses Medications

Hi

I'm a student nurse, please could somebody check if this is correect:

Amoxicillin can be prescribed (oral solution) 500mg 3 times daily for a 7year old child, max 30mg/kg

http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/formulary/bnfc/current/5-infections/51-antibacterial-drugs/511-penicillins/5113-broad-spectrum-penicillins/amoxicillin

...who weighs 23kg, would be 23 x 30 = 690

solution 400mg/5mL

so he'll get 690mg/400mg x 5mL = 8.6mL

8.6mL would be administered 3 times daily

Prescribed to treat acute bronchitis

I seriously appreciate any help :) Thank you

Not being in Great Britain, I can't access your source, but looking it up with the information I have at home - 2014 drug guide and Medscape - I'm finding that the dosage is anywhere between 25 and 50 mg/kg/day. So you have two potential problems there - what's the maximum safe dose for a child that weighs 23 kg? And is 500 mg q8 hours safe for that child to take?

Your math itself is good. It's just the ordered dosage and the maximum dosage that you've posted that's tripping me up. It almost reads like you've combined two different problems.

So would you say the dosage is to high? It is purely my calculations, for my essay...

From my resources? Yes. But I would double check with your sources.
