Hi RNinformatics!
What is the importance of attaining certification in CPHIMS?
Would ANCC certification as an Informatics Nurse be enough to establish professional recognition in this field?
Would additional certification such CPHIMS be beneficial for professional development for an experienced informatics nurse?
Thanks
Greetings Vlntrnurs,
I obtained my CPHIMS this year. I've been boad certified in Nursing Informatics for 8 years and set as another career goal to obtain my CPHIMS.
Per the HIMSS website:
"CPHIMS status provides both internal and external rewards. As a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems, you:
Enjoy the pride of recognition of knowing that you are among the elite in a critical field of healthcare; and Have a premier credential based on a sound assessment to distinguish yourself in an increasingly competitive marketplace."
Yea me!............ I am among the "elite"!!!

I'm not sure what you mean by "Would ANCC certification .... be enough to establish professional recognition in this field?" No, professional recognition in this field is not established soley via certification. I'd say certification is one method/mode...an additional credential.
Both the CPHIMS and the NI from ANCC are highly respected credentials established by two professional associations: 1) Nursing - the American Nurses Association and 2) Healthcare IT - the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. In order to sit for either of these certification exams you must first have a certain number of years of experience (working in this specialty/field) or a specific number of educational credits or a degree.

"Would additional certification such CPHIMS be beneficial for professional development for an experienced informatics nurse?" I can only answer for me and yes for me it has been beneficial. The CPHIMS is held not just by "informatics nurses" but also by others who work in HIT, healthcare Informatics.

Thank you, RnInformatics!
Being in the informatics field for over a decade, I frequently come across other professionals having attained the informatics nurse certification through ANCC and/or the CPHIMS through HIMSS.
It helps to see the value of these certifications from other experienced informatics nurses like yourself.
I know that this knowledge will definitely help other professionals understand the benefits of certification.
