Nursing through online teaching

Published

Hi I am an RN and Midwife currently doing my Teaching certificate online through a Uni in Australia. One of our Modules includes Online Facilitation which encompasses thinking both as a teacher of the the future (I do clinical facilitating with undergrads and other students as well) and as a student using the Online system of teaching. I am interested to hear from students and past students that have used this form of teaching and did you find it effective. I read through this forum and a comment from one nurse who went into nursing with fantastic expectations, then during the course became incredibly disillusioned with the education system. That 99% of the lectures were boring, uninformative and lacked any personality! I think it is fantastic that she made it through. It is my intent to use the Online system for some of the relevant topics with inclusion of video's, tests and discussion forums including assessments. What do you think if this as an aspect of nurse training and would appreciate feedback from any nurses, to ensure that we can provide quantity with quality education.

Online is appropriate for advanced education but not primary education. I received my MSN online. If done right, it is great. We had a topic every week to post, then were required to respond to our peers' posts. We also had papers, which were a great source of learning. Online learning is very self-directed and may not work for all students. You have to have the initiative to do all the work. The instructor must also stay dialed-in and direct the conversation.
