You can't allow that to happen.

If you're a parent of two or more children, you probably know what comes of allowing one kid or the other to influence your decision-making. Being a manager isn't much different.........you have to remember that the only real solution to conflict is one that allow both employees to "win", and you can't play favorites even if you can't stand one of them.

Perhaps we could help you better if you gave us a little more detail and context..........

No particular example related to my question. I'm a student realizing that I could be put in that situation sometime during my career, and even though I don't know the future circumstances, having a solution beforehand could save some stress. Thanks!!

Evaluate the specifics of the situation without any preconceived notionts. Make your decisions based on the facts and then live with the results. That's the way it always is whenever there is a disagreement in life. One person wants you to decide in one direction while another person wants you to make another decision. That's an everyday occurrance. You just do your best to be fair and understand that you can't please everyone.

As a manager I NEVER went down that road. I made the two of them sit down with me together at the same time with the goal that we were going to stay there and hash it out. I NEVER put myself in the position of he said/ she said. I also taught the managers below me to never put themselves in into that position.

I found many times the things they would say to me in private would be opposite of what they would say when the person they hated was actually in the room.
