I’m a nursing student set to graduate in late March with my ADN. I have a BA in a different field (education). We’re hoping to relocate to the Seattle area but I’ve heard that a BSN is strongly preferred. And I’ve heard they’re desperate for nurses. I am not the type of person to leap into anything blindly. Any information and advice would be appreciated!

It completely depends on where you want to live and work in Seattle. Hospitals (UW, Harborview, Virginia Mason, Seattle Childrens etc) within Seattle are unlikely to hire an ADN as they tend to pick from those attending BSN programs at the universities there. However, you may have luck in hospitals in the smaller surrounding cities. I know Providence in Everett has a residency program that accepts ADNs as long as you agree to have a BSN within 5 years. There may be others further south that I'm less familiar with. Check hospital job boards and see what their requirements are. They often say if a BSN is required or strongly preferred. Also, if clinics are an interest, a member of my ADN class got a clinic job in Seattle. Hope that helps!

Hi!
How are you?
Have you worked around Tacoma- Seattle area? Among the hospitals within Seattle which hospitals would you recommend that are supportive to Nurses?
Couple of recruiters contacted me from Tacoma General for Medical Surgical, ED and ICU.For Virginia Mason they want me to be in In-patient or primary facilities or ambulatory services then transfer to specialty area after 1 yr or less then Providence.
I need to move if I take any of the job within the area. How is the cost of living there?
What are the hospitals that pays good?
Thank you so much!

Hi,
I live north of Seattle, so am not fully familiar with the other hospitals south of it. I have not heard anything bad, and most seem to have a good reputation. However, I have not personally worked at any hospitals in Seattle or Tacoma. The cost of living in Seattle is quite high. When I lived there about 5 years ago, renting a 1 bedroom apartment would cost around $1500/mo. There were cheaper options, but they often required roommates. Rent tended to be somewhat cheaper south of Seattle, but not much. I would recommend looking up rental listings for current costs. As for pay, most Washington State hospitals are under the Washington State Nurses Association, and their contracts (including pay rates) are available on WSNA.org.
Hope that helps!
