Nursing Interview HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I am currently taking nursing class at the community college. But I have been called in for the interview by University of Texas at Houston for admission in B.A. in Nursing. Since, this will be my first interview I need any advise I can get. So, if anyone out there can provide some TIPS as what to wear (for female : 2 pc Suit or shirt and pant), how to prepare for writing sample, and what goes on during the interview. This does not have to be university specific, anything would help.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's so much about what you wear (clean, neat, pressed), and the guidelines for that can be found all over the place.

I think what you need to focus on is:

* the REASONS you want into the program

* what you hope to accomplish in your career

* how committed you are to staying the course

* and how effectively you communicate the above

* also, your leadership potential

* and your enthusiasm about the program

That's my opinion.

Try to focus on specific things you WANT to communicate to them....know, absolutely, what you are wanting to say when you go in.

And don't wait for them to ask questions.

The interviews I have done best at were the ones where I communicated to the interviewee without always being asked leading questions.

(Also: prepare for any "unexpected" questions. Know your weaknesses and have answers ready in case you're asked anything surprising)

Don't obsess over your clothing; pick a couple of outfits and then work on the content of the interview ~ good luck!

I don't have specific suggestions, except that I think UTH offers a BSN, not a BA. You don't want to be calling it the wrong thing and risk looking unprepared.

Good luck!

Sorry, I am Business Major and was posting this for my wife. I am sure she would know that its called BSN. ;) Its amazing I learn something new everyday. Thanks for the correction.

Also, Thanks for everyone who posted the reply!!!!!!!!!!

Having a corporate america background as well as having a lot of interviews under my belt, on both sides, my first sugestion is to relax. Try to leave humor at the door. Dress professionally. I would avoid jeans. Wear slacks or a professional dress.

Be honest with you answers. Don't lie. Believe me when I say it will come back to haunt you. Be realistic in your expectations. It is okay to be nervous. It makes you more human.

Avoid slang, such as: Like, You know, so on and so forth.

Most of all, be yourself. Don't try to be something that you are not.

Finally, go in there with questions on the program. And what you are looking for. You are interviewing them as much as you are interviewing them. You are looking for a good match.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!
