MSN or MS in Informatics

Can anyone give me advice as to which program to do? Should I go for an MSN with an emphasis in Nursing Informatics or go for a Masters in Healthcare Informatics? My ultimate goal is to work in Informatics and develop and implement different systems. Which program would be better when it comes to getting a job? Does anyone have experience while job seeking as to what employers are looking for more? MSN or Masters in Informatics? Thanks!

Greetins Nursinhaze,

Search the NI Forum and read what other's have posted on this subject. Its a question that has been asked and answered many, many, many times before.

Obtaining a Masters will not guarantee you a job in this specialty. Hiring managers ususally dont have a prefererence for a degree concentration an much as they prefer someone who is experienced in the area they are hiring for - the role they are attempting to fill the position for. If an employer is looking to hire a project manager experience at successfully accomplishing this role is far more important than which degree the person has. Icing on the cake would be finding an experienced project manage who also has certification or a degree in Project Management.

Your career goal(s) should guide your degree concentration. You wrote you are interested in "developing" different systems.......extremely vague......develop how? "Developing and implementing" are not necessrily the same. There are many people/roles who are involved in "implementing systems" - the CIO, the Project Manager, the analysts, Educators/Trainers, Informatics Nurses, IT/IS Managers. On the vendor side application specialists, engagement managers, sales, marketing, Quality, etc

Are you interested in being a Project manager, analyst, working in Testing or as a Trainer? Perhaps you should refine your goals, learn more about this specialty, get additional on the job/real world experience before investing in an advance degree.

Good Luck
