Nursing informatics practicum

Your best bet is to contact the staff development/nursing education dept. of an academic medical center, since they are used to providing practicums for students, of all disciplines. If they have an Informatics dept, they can assist you. If they don't yet have this dept., the staff development or IS depts that work with clinical systems will be your next point of contact.

What area of southern California? Your school should already have signed contracts with healthcare organizations to provide preceptors since it can take a few months to complete all the paperwork.

I recently finished my Masters in nursing leadership so I have some idea of facilities that accept students for preceptorship.

Don't limit your practicum experience to the hospital setting.

Informatics practicum opportunities exsist at vendor organizations, in home health agencies, within physician practices and in the outpatient clinic setting.

Try posting this query to the ANIA-CARING listserve. Contacting an exprienced informatics professional directly instead of an organization may be your best route. As another poster wrote your school should also be able to directly you to practicum experiences.

I'm currently on a consulting engagement in northern cali as the project manager for a nursing, bar code medication adminitration and CPOE implementation project.

I am presently taking my MSN in Nursing Informatics online and will need to find a preceptor for my practicum soon. Does anybody know of any hospital in Southern California accepting such arrangements?

I am thinking of starting the MSN program through Walden and I am quite new to the Nor Cal area. Is it difficult to find a mentor for the practicum?
