Nursing Informatics OR Healthcare informatics????

Published

I am trying to make a decision. Nursing informatics OR healthcare informatics. Which will make me more marketable and pay more. Any suggestions on schools. I currently live in Texas and Texas has only one Nursing informatics program at Texas Tech university. There is another one in Houston but it is non-nursing. For all of the nurses who have done nursing informatics would you still decide to do nursing informatics of healthcare informatics? I am torn!!!!!

I can't be too much help as I am looking for the same information as you are. My best advice is to read through all the old posts here and if you are currently employed talk to your HR department/nurse recruiter about job opportunities/salary for both and you could also talk to informatics nurses where you work about job outlook. That is my plan at least. Have you looked into any online schools? Maybe you could go out of state if its online only. Sorry I'm not more help but from everything I'm reading on here is seems like the degree is hit or miss and experience is key.

I was looking a little more around the internet and it looks like nusing informatics is a nursing degree (which I assumes means its more valuable) and healthcare informatics is not a nursing degree. You can go into it with any bachelors. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

If you want an online program try Western Governors (WGU). They just added an Informatics degree which you can do as RN-MSN or BSN-MSN. They also offer other informatics without the nursing degree. They also have a BS in Health Information Management but its not specifically nursing. I am going there now and thinking about the MSN informatics program vs leadership. WGU is very flexible and inexpensive as well as CCNE accredited. I really love the program because its totally asynchronous and you can work at your own pace over the 6 month term and add more courses if you have time without incurring additional tuition. It's wgu.edu

I would go with nursing vs healthcare informatics because it highlights your license. I don't have all the info but you might want to look at and explore the programs WGU offers to give you a better idea of which one is a better fit for your career choices.
