Nursing, should I stick with it?

Nurses Career Support

Published

So here is the deal, a while back...during my first two years of dreaded nursing I wrote an article expressing my frustrations related to all the expectations that were required from me as a nurse. I am happy to announce that after years of gaining experience that I truly love being a nurse. We have the ability to change people's lives. We can help them decide on medical procedures, educate them on the importance of medications, and advocate for those who cannot. I take pride in knowing that in 1 shift I can impact a handful of people. Yes, people are rude. Yes, family members can drive you nuts. Yessssss, I am tired. But at the end of the day there is no other profession like nursing. Next step is to start respecting ALL types of nurses and interdisciplinary members part of your patient's health care team. Does anyone have any tools that can be applied daily to help build communication within the team? Yes other than keeping it professional, because that doesn't work all the time. ? You know when you are talking to a Dr and physical therapy comes into the station and asks who has 5? And you are busy communicating with a physician to hear...and then they actually interrupt you!!! Or those stupid annoying phone calls while your hands are covered in secretions....lol..send help ?

It isn't clear what you are looking for here. Your title asks if you should stick with nursing, but then your post rambles and espouses how great it is to be a nurse. There's a buried question about how to communicate better and then a few complaints following that.

What is it exactly you are needing help with?

Stay calm, control your own non-verbals and paraverbals, in general model the behavior you would like to see more of. Be kind and understanding and give people the benefit of the doubt whenever you reasonably can. Save all umbrage for situations in which it is truly warranted, and even then proceed professionally.

Being able to influence others through genuine positive behaviors is I think more possible and more common than we usually believe. And, in the event that it changes nothing, you personally will have still gained something significant.

Thanks for your response...it's so simple right...treat ppl how you want to be trx. But in the heat of the moment it's hard!!

Sorry if this post confuses you....it was a follow up to a post I wrote years ago about making the right career choice. So I posted yes I am happy to be a nurse..the part where I needed advice was to help with commutation while under pressure. There are so many stressors and interruptions during a single shift it's hard to always maintain professional communication.

*** i may have responded to the wrong comment here. Sorry about that! Jkl33 thank you for your awesome advice+
