I am a new nurse for about 4 months now. And I work in a nursing home in the health care area. I was just wandering if I stayed here for a while is it going to be harder for me to go work at a hospital. I have heard that if you work in a nursing home you get labled as a nursing home nurse and hospitals won't hire you. Is this true?????

No, just get a job as a med/surg nurse in the hospital.

Well one of the drawbacks I see to staying there is this... You're getting your new grad experience in a nursing home, which is okay. Now when you look for a hospital nurse job a couple years or more later down the road, they will see you as an experienced nurse...not a new grad anymore. So as long as you are a confident person and feel you will be an "experienced RN" when you look for a job, you'll be perfectly okay. Now if you look for a hospital job feeling inexperienced, you may have some issues. Because the hospitals will probably view you much differently than a new grad.
BUT... You also need to do what YOU want to do. If you feel more comfortable working in a nursing home, and you enjoy it there...then get some of your experience there. But if you feel like you just aren't learning enough, or you don't feel satisfied...maybe think about leaving now.
By the way, I'm a new grad myself and I don't have enough experience to know for sure what hospital nurse managers will think and do... I was just giving my two cents :)
Good luck to you
