Teaching in Nursing Certificate Program (3 Courses)

  • Course One: This course will provide an introduction to the principles of teaching. The course will discuss educational theories, teaching strategies and learning activities. Participants must have access to a group of learners and work with a preceptor in a teaching practicum.

  • Course Two: This course provides an overview of evaluation strategies. Participants will develop an evaluation plan and select evaluation strategies for a unit of instruction.

  • Course Three: This course will acquaint the participant with a variety of computer technologies that support the teaching-learning process. The course will discuss principles of distance learning, use of the Internet in teaching and learning, and how to integrate computer technologies into the teaching-learning process.

Teaching & Learning in Web-based Courses Certificate Program (4 Courses)

  • Course One: In this course, participants learn about and practice using a course management software program. The learning activities include practice chats and the development of a homepage. A scavenger hunt will be done so the participants can locate technology tools and support services at their own location. The course will require 8-10 hours of time to review and interact with the course content and to complete designated activities.

  • Course Two: This course will provide an overview of the design of Web-based courses in academic settings and healthcare organizations. It will allow participants the opportunity to develop a learning segment, from design through implementation. During the course participants will learn to: explain the context in which various Web education tools are used; assess institutional infrastructure and factors impacting Web course development; develop measurable learning outcomes; develop course pages using a simple Web editor; edit images for use on the Web; and implement effective Web and instructional design principles.

  • Course Three: Participants will use threaded discussion boards, chat rooms, learner assessment surveys, multimedia, and interactive teaching, learning, and evaluation strategies. A commitment of approximately 20 hours will be necessary to interact with the course content and materials, and to participate in discussion and chat work groups.

  • Course Four: The Practicum is the culmination of the certificate program. During the first courses participants will have developed a learning module or segment. The completed learning segment will be reviewed and critiqued by both instructional consultants and peers.

Clinical Faculty: A New Practice Role (1 Course)

  • This course presents content related to the role of a clinical educator. The course provides content, scenarios, resources, and examples for the nurse who is responsible for the clinical supervision and evaluation of nursing students or staff in a health care facility. Content includes role development, managing the clinical day, clinical instruction, and evaluation.

Moving to Web-Based Learning: A Conference for Educators

This conference is co-provided by Indiana University School of Nursing Center for Teaching and Lifelong Learning and the National League for Nursing.

Experts have identified four stages in the move to Web-based learning--Web presence, Web enhanced, Web centered, and Web course*. This conference is directed to educators who are within the first 3 stages.

You may be an educator who is just beginning to develop Web-based courses. Or you may be an educator who has just been assigned the responsibility for the development of teaching a Web course, yet you have not been involved with Web courses.

This conference will present you with basic knowledge and resources to facilitate the transition to Web-based learning, both for the student and the instructor.
