BSN/MSN question

ok, I am a RN with an ADN. My goal is to teach nursing, so I would need my MSN for that right? I would really like to do it online, so I've been looking at my options.

My biggest question is: is there any advantage/disadvantage to doing a RN to MSN program vs. RN to BSN & then BSN to MSN???

I've looked at University of Phoenix, but they don't have a RN to MSN program. Walden university does, but I don't know much about them. I saw them at an education fair at my work & I really liked the school overall. I also talked with Cambridge college, but they don't offer online & I just didn't get a good feel really for the school, but they do offer RN to MSN, although I don't see a specialization offered, like for education or management.

Is the specialization part of the MSN really necessary??

And what sort of accreditation should the school have? A lot of these online schools are based out of state (I'm in CA) so how can I find out if they are approved by CA?

Any other info/suggestions would be much appreciated. I am 35, have a family, would like to be done with my MSN ASAP. That is my main priority, to save time.

I am looking to start around January or February.

State schools are much cheaper. Not to mention they are typically accredited by the NLN. Many of them offer RN to MSN programs. I know of at least 2 in my state. My advice, check out state schools in Cali.

but I want to do it online & have not found that offered by state schools............and most of them take much longer than the online ones offered by out of state schools............time is my issue, not money.

Good for you in wanting to be an educator. I completed my BSN with Univeristy of Phoenix and am now in an MSN program through UMKC. Depending on the college and your State board of nursing will answer you question about what degree you need and at what level. I teach at a community college and have only my BSN, but have 5 yrs to complete my MSN. So yes, it is possible to teach with just your BSN.

well you say you CAN teach with just your BSN, but you also say that you have 5 years to complete your MSN, so you DO still need the MSN. My issue is not how soon can I teach, but that I want to finish my school as fast as possible, no matter the cost.

I went to my BRN website & they have no MSN programs listed for accreditation purposes, only BSN programs. And the only online BSN program listed is UOP, so does that mean it's the only online one that is accredited in the state of CA???? I tried calling the BRN to ask for more info on this, but it takes HOURS to get through & I gave up. If anyone can please help me out with this I would really appreciate it.
