Hi. I need help coming up with a nursing diagnosis. The patient is 2 days postpartum and has abdominal distention because of the presence of too much gas. Is there any diagnosis that deals with an inability to pass gas? Any help is much appreciated. (^_^)

constipation r/t ??? aeb distended abdomen ([color=#3366ff]constipation and http://www1.us.elsevierhealth.com/merlin/gulanick/constructor/index.cfm?plan=13)

when was her last bm? did this patient have a c-section? or receive any narcotics? is constipation a previous problem? if so, any of these may be the source of the distension. anything that slows the peristaltic action of the bowels can create an ileus and result in the build up of gas. you need to investigate that to find the "???" part of the diagnostic statement above.

last bm that morning, c-section, no narcotics. just a gas issue. no issues with constipation. lol. it's so hard to find an nd. but there's just gotta be one for inability to pass flatus. isn't that eventually bad for someone?

Something is not right here if she is having BMs, but not passing gas. If she had a C-section and she has gas then this is most likely some type of ileus and is probably related to sluggish peristalsis. If the distension is causing pain then she has Acute Pain. Other than constipation and enemas to help remove the gas, the doctor needs to attend to a potential ileus immediately.

LOL funny only because I actually had this problem after the traumatic delivery of my daughter it was day two. Only I did not have a c-section. turns out it was trapped gas from lack of moving around and diet. Too much apple juice and a lazy GI tract. Resolved with getting out of bed and moving around to stimulate blood flow and warm compresses.
