Nursing career fears

Published

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site and am hoping to use it as a resource as I head back to school for nursing.

I've already gotten my BS in another field and was not happy so I am heading back to do what I wanted to do the first time - nursing!

The reason I didn't the first time was because I had a lot of fears and I am wondering if anyone else was in my boat.

I'm scared of needles (though I worked in a pharmacy and got to use them in the IV room and desensitized myself to them) and some of the usual "medical fears" but it's my hope that instructors help you work through your fears.

Does anyone have any experience or advice with this? Thanks for your help!

Yes, many former nursing students such as me had fears in nursing school, but we quickly got over them. If you discover that you can't get over your fears then consider an ancillary field such as health information management. Historically, this field was called medical records, but it has gone far beyond that today. There are a growing shortage of workers in this relatively unknown field. You can get your BS in this area and make equal to or even better in many cases than an RN starting out. Check out http://www.ahima.org for more information. Best wishes.

Needles are a typical fear which for me resolved fairly early on. Medication adm. is a big one which still makes me pause. The thing that really is troublesome is the pt. ratios, inferior computor systems that many hospitals implement to qualify for Jacho certification., and lack of unity amoung the nursing profession.
