I started to take some classes in my twenties to be a nurse .. quit to get back with old boyfriend.. not good idea.. now ex husband.. :( Any now 24 years later I still want to be a nurse. I worked hard for years in family business. and raised two kids.. I have been taking a few classes here and there and will finally be able to be full time in a community college in the fall! I am hoping to apply to nursing school in a year. Some people say I am too old.. but I am thinking I would rather try and fail then not try! I do have money for private nursing school but I read if you do that then you can't get a masters..because they aren't accredited. I don't know if that is true or not.... anyway..I love this site!!!

Thanks everyone for your comments and encouragement! I wanted to tell you all that I did finally make it into nursing school!! I am so excited! It is an accredited school!

Your encouragement helped me to decide to keep on taking classes and not let my age discourage me!

Congrats! I have graduated since my post and I actually took an extra year to do so because I failed the 3rd semester math exam by 2 points, but I persevered and I now work on a Cardiopulmonary floor! It is very hard...and I love it!:yeah:Good Luck to you!!

I'm 53 and just starting my third week of an ADN program. I'm starting to think it's possible to make it out the other side! Of course, we haven't had our first exam yet. Hopefully I won't have my mind changed for me :uhoh3:. Good luck to all re-bloomers!

Congratulations to Ann on getting into nursing school. I was delighted to find this thread because I am 48 (49 in November) and I also want to become a nurse. It is nice to find that I am not alone. :)

As a non-traditional student, my advice is to go to a small school where they will hopefully respect what you have accomplished in your life and not expect you to fit into the cookie cutter profile (e.g., right out of h.s. with no responsibilities.) Most nursing programs are terribly unorganized and stressful. I was 54 when I started at a very large university.....don't know if I can put up with anymore nonsense long enough to graduate a BSN program. Sorry for the negative response. I'm really a very positive person, but if I knew then what I know now, I would not have chosen nursing school. I wanted to be a nurse. The nursing program experience has turned off my desire to be part of the profession. I feel that I've wasted my only opportunity to have a positive educational experience.
