dealing with my stna's

Nurses Career Support

Published

I'm a fairly new nurse who doesn't want to be labeled by my STNA's...I highly believe in hard work however. When my STNA's "relax" at the end of the night by watching the tv and there is still things that could be done by them i get aggrevated. I give it my all while at work. I don't want to push my high expectations on others but I feel they need to step it up...how do I encourage/get them to complete there assignments till the end of shift without being labeled as a "b"...is this possible or do i need to get over this?

I try to work as a team with my stna's. They have assignments that I delegate and oversee. If i see they are "bored" or sitting around I ask them to help me with things I need done. Obviously not nursing tasks but such things as getting new 02 tubing and masks or helping my turn a resident to complete a tx or put cream on them, maybe have them sit with a anxious resident and talk to them . I help them out during the shift so this is not one sided. I try not to "order" them to do things just ask for help and say please :) They are always happy to help and I think it makes them feel important and like we are on the same level. They are happy I check up on them and verify they are completing their tasks because I got their back if management says anything and I am the one completing their reviews. I feel like I am being their superior yet we are a team. Out of respect and our friendship we help each other out.

It is very helpful working in teams.
