Nursing Assistant state exam questions

Published

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to post this in, but here goes. Has anyone out there taken the CNA state certification test recently? I know it'll be a little different in each state, but I'm wondering what kind of environment to expect. I'm fine with the written part; that's a breeze for me. However, I'm a clutz when I'm nervous, and although I don't plan on being nervous, you never know. So I'm more curious about the skills part of the test. Were your tester people mean, nice, or ambivalent? Was it straightforward or convoluted? Was there anything presented that you hadn't been prepared for? Anyway, thanks for your answers!

UPDATE: I took the certification test today and passed! Yay! I'll start work Monday on the surgical floor as a CNA. Whoopee! Now I'll just have to make it through 2 years of nursing school. Wish me luck please. Thanks for all of your suggestions and encouragement.

I was the same as you. Nervous for the skills part, not the written part. Big things they look for, hand washing. I did a manual BP. Got that right away but the lady explained to me I'd have 3 chances to get it.

DId a partial bed bath, which just meant upper body. I used a few rags. Basically they want to make sure you are not washing the eyes with the same rag you do peri-care with. Common sense. Dry off the manican. Always do regular things like 2 side rails up,call light in place, check ID band on pt.

I did a transfer from bed to wheelchair. Big things, use the gait belt, put their shoes on. Never bare feet on the floor, that's a fall risk.

Its mostly common sense things. Did your school you took your CNA class at give you a check off sheet for everything they look for with each skill? I studied that a lot before I went for mine. I think, as long as you took your class seriously, and got good grades, put pt care first, you will do fine!

Good luck

Thanks for the feedback and everything. I was given a booklet before the examination date that had everything in it I'd be tested on with a checklist. I was asked to wash hands, take radial pulse, ROM on one shoulder, make an occupied bed, and transfer from bed to wheel chair. I was almost disappointed that I wasn't called on to take manual BP because I'd been practicing on my entire family for a good while. Pretty darn good at it now. But, I will use that skill in nursing school, too, so I'm glad I've gotten good with it. Thanks again for the support!
