Nursing Assistant Jobs in Canada?

Published

Hi everyone,

I am considering relocating to Toronto next year from Boston and was wondering if anyone has any information on Nursing Assistant jobs there. I would be going to the University of Toronto to complete the two year BSN program (I already have a Bachelors in Management) and I already have my CNA and HHA license but I havent been able to find many jobs. Most of the jobs I have seen are caregiver positions and some home health aide positions. Are these types of jobs rare in Ontario?

Thank you in advance!

Very limited jobs in big cities, If you want a job try rural communities

Thank you for the input!

They are called PSWs ( Personal Support Workers) and most places will require that you have the certificate which is an 8 month program. Do you have a work visa? There are lots of PSW jobs, mostly in LTC and the community.

I am in the process of obtaining a work visa. So a PSW is similar to a Nursing Assistant? I have seen some job postings like "Patient Assistant Liaison." It seems to combine many tasks of a Nursing Assistant with that of a housekeeper / Dietary Aide. While I am in school I basically want something that can lead up to RN so I am trying to figure out what I can do!

Thank you Loriangel14

PSWs in the community basically assist with ADLs as well as do basic housework and meal prep. But like I said most jobs require the certificate.

Thank you so much!

Suggest you look at the information on the PSW registry of Ontario, there are over 100,000 PSWs in Ontario, the majority work in long-term care, some work in homecare and a small percentage work in hospitals. Toronto hospital and longterm care employers hire graduates of PSW programs that meet the standards set by the ministry of health and long-term care. Toronto's public community colleges (George Brown, Centennial, Humber, Seneca) all have PSW programs that meet the guidelines and the graduates of the programs offer employers plenty of qualified applicants to choose from.

Just so you know, a complaint could be filed against an employer who hired an international student with a temporary work permit over a qualified PSW who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
