Job Interview - When to reveal sensitive personal information

Dear Nurse Beth,

I have a question regarding when in the job interview process a candidate should reveal sensitive personal information, such as a history of drug/alcohol use in remission? Nurse assistance programs require disclosure, need for quarter reports, and random drug screens. If one has successfully completed such an assistance program on a non-regulatory basis via self-disclosure, should the job seeker still share this with a potential employer before a job offer is made?

Dear What to Reveal,

Thank goodness you got help before you had any serious criminal or employment problems. In your case, there should be no reason to share your alcohol/drug history if you are not asked, and if there was no action taken on your nursing license.

If You Have a Criminal History

You only have to disclose what you are asked on the job application. So if you have traffic tickets, and they ask if you were ever convicted of a felony or misdemeanor, not including traffic tickets, you do not have to report the traffic tickets.

Being arrested is different than being convicted. Be sure you know what they are asking. Don't withhold information that is asked but don't volunteer information that is not asked.

If Your License Was Suspended

Likewise, if your license was ever revoked, or you were disciplined by the BON, and they specifically ask either question...answer it truthfully.

Personal Medical History

Unless you are requesting a reasonable work accommodation related to a medical condition or disability, or you have work restrictions on your license, then you do not need to disclose your medical history.

The interviewer does not really want to be there, he/she/it has better things to do than listening to how great you think you are.
