Nurses Recovery

Published

So recently had a run in with alcohol and decided to get help. Will this affect my ability to get a license?

Let me kinda rephrase. l wanted to quit but didn't think it was safe for me to come down due to the DTs and stay off for good. l though the best option was to check myself in to a hospital and be under supervision while l did so. Now l am using resources to stay off but l was wondering if the state can see that l was in a hospital for ETOH abuse and l won't get a license.

In California you will not be denied a license because you had an alcohol problem and sought help. There is a caveat though. On your licensure application there is a question about treatment for a drug, alcohol or psych problem involving psychosis. If you answer yes to the question you will likely begin your career under a monitoring contract. IF no legal charges were involved in your treatment - then your medical records are protected by HIPAA, but you should probably consult an attorney familiar with profession practice issues to determine the best way to proceed career wise.

No legal charges or anything of the sort. Utilized a medical facility and their detox protocol.

Do not tell BON anything. They will not know unless you tell them.

Newly clean and sober it may help to work in less stressful venues, I got clean and sober as a young waitress; 7 years sober when I got my RN and worked nights in oncology. Between stress and sleep deprivation it is a miracle I did not relapse!

They will only know if u tell them. Keep your chin up & keep moving in the right direction.

I personally know nurses that have been thru self admitted "detox" thru an ER, which landed me a voluntary week long stay on the psych ward. It got the job done.

The grey area is what u choose to disclose. We all are aware of the mental health/addiction questions on the licensing application.

Personally, I've taken my chances. I was not employed as an RN at the time, I wholeheartedly disagree with the stigma and repercussions that may/will unfold with blatent honesty.
