Nurses and reality TV?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was wondering what everyones thoughts are on nurses (student or professional) being on a reality TV show?

For example, I'm sure some of you are familiar with VH1's "Of Love" series (Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, Daisy of Love, etc.), Survivor, American Idol, MTV's Real World, and other such shows. If a nurse was picked to be a part of the cast, how would that affect his/her professional career? Would it?

I mean, if you've seen some of these shows, you'll know that there are a lot of crazy people on them: getting drunk, being rowdy, fighting, being overly sexual, etc. I can't imagine this being a very good situation for a nurse (or any other professional for that matter) to be in.

Any time I've watched these types of shows, the cast members are usually looking to be an actor/model/singer, are currently an exotic dancer, or not doing much of anything as far as a job/career goes. So obviously them being on a reality show wouldn't have much of a negative impact on their career. (Maybe with the exception of Survivor or American Idol - I'll admit I haven't seen either.)

What are your thoughts/feelings on this topic? Should a nurse or professional be free to go on a TV show like this, act however they want, without suffering any professional repercussions? Or should their actions be held against them?

Wow! Thanks so much for the replies, everyone! Lemme go through some of these:

Let's just say that I wouldn't want to be her patient after I saw her antics on tv.

This is probably my biggest concern. If I were to be chosen and actually began filming for the show, I don't know what kind of situations I would be put in that would be manipulated by the producers. They could make me look really bad, silly, stupid, unethical, etc. If I weren't going into a career like nursing, I probably wouldn't care. But I will be taking care of patients, and become very close and intimate with them. I would hate to make a patient uncomfortable because they saw me swearing and fighting on a reality show! My patients come first. It's one thing if I were at a bar somewhere, but it's completely different to be on national TV.

They show you walking into some guys bedroom and the insinuation is that you are having sex with that person. Could be you were only using the bathroom...but for the sake of good TV, they will make sure you look like a tramp.

Definitely concerned about this, too. In each of these silly shows, there's always some kind of "challenge" for the contestant to do to win a date (haha this is ridiculous, but I digress~) and what if it were some kind of striptease? (A la Bret Michaels in Rock Of Love Bus.) Not only would I feel uncomfortable doing that as a person, but I'd also feel REALLY awkward walking in on a 15 year old boy patient looking at me with heart eyes because of my romp on the pole. No thanks!

Anything dating related and you are really taking a chance at being exploited sexually on the air. and while you would likely not get fired for appearing on a show, the appearance of impropriety can go a long way in your reputation. but people obviously do it all the time, and probably tons of them have no regrets.

I think it would be a lot of fun to do, if not just for the sake of saying "hey I did that!", but nursing is way more important to me than going on some reality show. Unlike 99% of the people who go on shows like that, I don't want to be discovered, be famous, whatever. Nursing is #1 for me. I was passionate about that in my e-mail that I sent to casting, and I think that could be one of the reasons why they want to interview me. They could use my desire for nursing against me by either not casting me, or making me appear like all the other trashy people that are typically on these types of shows. (Not everyone is, but you get what I mean.)

I have a couple days to RSVP, and I'm thinking I might go out for the interview anyway just for the experience of it. After that is when they will contact me for either another interview or because they want me on the show. Do I really think this guy is going to be the "love of my life"? Absolutely not, I don't think any of the girls who submitted their applications believe that. But it might be a fun experience... or it could ruin me.

So one more thing before I let this thread die off, what would YOU guys do if you were a hiring manager and were interviewing someone (such as myself) who had been on a trashy dating reality TV show? Would your hiring or not hiring of this person be based solely on their actions on the show, or based on him/her being on that type of show altogether? How do you think your employer would deal with something like that? If you were a patient, how would you feel about your nurse after seeing him/her on TV?

Thanks again for the responses, everyone!
