hi, I'm a Labor/Maternity nurse in PA an my family is THINKING about moving to TX. I've heard some great things about McKinney (good schools, low crime, etc) and was wondering what the job market is like there. Are there Labor and Delivery jobs? Can anyone tell me what the starting rate for RN's is there? And do most places require a BSN (I'm working on mine now). I'm in the Philadelphia suburban area now, and am looking for a better place to raise my kids, as well as getting more for my money in a home (I currently live in a row home that was $175,000). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

McKinney is a higher-priced, rapidly-growing suburb of Dallas. While you will probably be able to get more house for your money, be aware that the area has astronomically high property taxes.
The nursing job market in the Dallas area has been tough lately, especially for new grads who want hospital employment. As a result, the new grad hospital internships are fiercely competitive. There are numerous nursing schools in the area and, this creates an oversupply of new nurses that are being churned into the local job market every few months.
In addition, masses of experienced nurses have been moving here over the past few years from other states, which is only adding to the glut. During my five years of living in Texas I've met nurses who have relocated to this area from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Arizona, Ohio, California, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Iowa, Michigan, Maryland, Oregon, Florida, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Indiana, Missouri, and many other states.
Most of the major Dallas-area hospitals will pay a new grad RN in the $22 to $25 hourly range. Non-hospital settings sometimes pay significantly more.
Thanks, I am not a new grad. I've been a nurse for 5 yrs, and am not looking to move for a few more. When you say that nurses outside the hosp can make signicantly more, what kinds of places are you referring to? Here where I live, hospitals seem to pay the best. Thanks.
