nurses getting involved with patients

Published

I am a nursing student and need to get some opinions from nurses for a class assignment. The topic is nurses "crossing the line" or getting involved with patients. Anyone have any thoughts? I'd really appreciate it.

Getting emotionally involved with a patient is not a good idea because:

1. it can cloud your judgement ( if something happens to this patient, the nurse might panic)....this is why nurses are not supposed to treat relatives.

2. it can be very manipulative ( from either side)

3. the state board of nursing takes a very dim view of this

There's a thread in here somewhere about nurses dating patients, had a lot of views and problems about it.

Never go there.

i've heard of nurses dating pts long after they were no longer pt's anymore. As previous poster said, never go there. Family or pt can always alledge that you've done something improper (especially if items come up missing) or accuse you of something or another.

Dating patients was the topic.....Has 80 or so replies.....check it out.

if you mean "getting involved," as in having an intimate emotional and/or sexual relationship, then fuhgeddabowdit! :nono: if you mean "getting involved" as in becoming overly wrapped up in the patient's care, family, etc. then i'd say that there could be a lot of issues for you...you need to learn more about the therapeutic relationship, and you need to learn more about yourself and your own motivation. not being able to leave your patients at work can be detrimental to your health.
