Nurse Practitioners satisfaction

Published

I recently read something here that mentioned that nurse practitioners are not satisfied with their careers. I don't believe that to be true. I have been a nurse practitioner since 1991 and have spent the last 20 years in Gastroenterology and I love what I do. I have autonomy, I have job satisfaction, I get compensated well and I am considered an expert in my field. I am currently enrolled in an online DNP program to work toward doing my best to make a difference in Nursing. I would encourage any nurse to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner. Don't listen to what a few may say, do your own research.

My colleagues are all looking for other job opportunities...some non-NP but definitely not hospitalist NP.

Why? The patient load is unrealistic and the changes which ask you to do more with less time and less resources is frustrating us all. As nurses, we want to look after our patients well...but the workload is such that you logistically cannot, unless you put in countless hours of unpaid OT on a daily basis...and eventually burnout.

I am lucky that I have a job offer to work with a population I have always loved so I am exiting the zoo in Nov. I only wish my NP colleagues had exit opportunities.
