Depending on what type of NP you want to be, you need some experience first in order to find a good fit. For me, I worked ER for 10 years and had a wide range of experiences and certifications.

It all depends on the program and type of NP you want to become. Some schools require 1-2 years of "general" nursing experience for NPs. Certain NP programs, such as pediatric or neonatal NP programs, usually require 1-2 years of relevant clinical experience prior to entering their programs.
