NP job opprotunities in Cali?

Hi,

I recently got accepted into an FNP program and have been having one hell of a debate of whether to accept it, or just wait and go to med school. The hard part of my decision is of course, if i complete an FNP, will there be jobs out there when im done? (i've heard that NPs might be a declining trend) The tempting thing about med school is that once im done jumping through all the loops, i will be able to practice anywhere i want, but as everyone knows as an NP you need job openings (in most states) because you have to collaborate with physicians in most states... Does anyone know what the job outlook is like for NP's in cali or in the east coast? Are there jobs out there and does it look like the career outlook will be positive? Currently i work in an ED as an RN, but i hope to maybe do some family practice with an advanced degree in the future... to be honest im a city boy and i find it might be hard to move out to rural areas.. so does anyone know if there are NP openings in urban doctor offices and/or hospitals? I know the pay isn't as good as RN pay, but basically a job that can pay the bills and is fulfilling is all i need~ Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I think the future of NPs is growing, not declining. With the shortage of MD's and the expense of hiring them with their huge salaries, NPs are a more practical option.

At any rate, go to Indeed.com Lots of NP jobs posted there.

You should also consider the debts incurred in Med school vs NP school...

That's a difficult question to answer. Here in N. California (San Francisco Bay Area) there are lots of NPs and not as many NP jobs. There are lots of nursing jobs (due to the shortage). I know one woman who graduated with an NP degree 2 years ago and could not find an NP job, so she worked as an RN at two different places to pay her bills. There are also lots of schools around here that offer NP degrees, so that's why there is a glut of NP candidates. I'm not saying there are no jobs, but it may take a little more effort to find the NP job you want. You can go to different hospital websites and look at the various NP openings online; that should give you a clue. S. Califonria (LA) may be different. Good luck.
