How long does it take to get results from the computerized GRE general test?

You get the results immediately after taking the exam, if you choose to keep the score. If you feel as though you didn't do well you have the option of not accepting (or seeing) the score.

And they only give you 5 minutes to make that choice! Yikes! Imagine my surprise at seeing that, but I had been told that if you start seeing harder and harder questions, you are more likely to be doing well, and since I had seen math questions I'd never seen before on any practice test I decided to see my grades and I did fine. Phew!

Okay, if the application deadline is January 15th, do you think I have time to take the GRE and meet the application deadline? There are testing dates available last week of November and early December. How much prep is involved in taking the GRE or would you recommend not worrying about it too much and just taking the test?

I would recommend that you buy a prep book now. You can find them at any boostore. I found the Princeton review helpfull. If you find the prep book a breeze then go ahead and write it now, if you find that the review book is hard then take more time to prepare.

Well, if feel like you feel pretty comfortable with the material..everyone is different, so this may be enough time for you. I'd take a practice exam first and see where you stand, you may be more ready than you think! What program are you applying too?

yea right after you finish the exam they send you to a screen asking if you want to see your scores - but if you see them they'll be recorded and sent to the schools you chose.

its a mind-game, because you feel like you did terrible, and its tempting to click "no" and try to take the test again.

At least thats how I felt. I looked at my scores though, and I got a 1350.

The writing portion takes a couple weeks to grade though.

Edit: most people who don't study bomb the test. I would highly advise checking out a prep book from your library and doing a couple computer practice tests (usually the books come with a CD) to see where you're at.
