Thus far Victoria is the only state (and the first in the world) to have legally mandated nurse/patient ratios. During the forthcoming enterprise agreement renegotiation there will be an attempt to lower some ratios (eg 1:3 in acute stroke). As previously posted, in acute care at level A hospitals the ratios are -
AM 1:4 + in charge
PM 1:4 + in charge
ND up to 1:8 including in charge
My ward operates with the highest ND ratios at my hospital - depending on skill mix and acuity we have 1:8 + in charge or 1:7 with the in charge taking 4 patients.
Specializes in Oncology, Medical, cardiac, surgical,.
I work in Queensland in a Private Hospital and the norm is 1/6 AM shift and 1/8 PM and ND 1/18 One AIN ND & PM and 2 for five hours AM shift. We are constantly busy and we could do alot more for our patients but there is never enough time SAD!
