We are trying to come up with some rules for time off. Something that is fair. We have about 100 employees so obviously not everyone can be off during the summer. Right now we do first come first serve and let people have 2 weeks. I am curious what other hospitals or individual units do.

We go by seniority, one week during the summer. Divided into 5 groups, each group has a week to submit their choice. There's also a calendar that is filled in, so those who select later know what weeks are still available. Those who don't submit their request during their assigned week to do so have to wait until after everyone else. Then, if there are still enough slots left open, a second week is up for grabs first come first served.

You have a pretty manageable staff size. You could take a couple of options to your staff, give them a short deadline and let them decide between the 2. The professional staff, in particular, will appreciate the inclusion into a process which will directly affect them.
We used seniority as well, however, we divided by shift and by discipline. Otherwise it was pretty much the same as posted above. I am sure you will get lots of good ideas. Good luck.
