[h=1]Nursing management in Australia?[/h]Hi

I was wondering how nursing works in Australia? I wonder if Hospitals in Australia have ward sisters and what power they have? Also I wander if hospitals have matrons and how they work. The Uk got rid of them (matron) and brought back a matron with minimum power in 2001.

So how does it work in Australia?

Thanks

Yes we have ward sisters. They are called Nurse Unit Managers. By powers what do you mean? I can hire the staff I want, firing has to go through the process with HR etc. I am responsible for my budget and have to explain any overrun to my divisional director of nursing.

There is no matron the CNM is responsible for the standards on the ward answering to the div don and edon. There is a bed manager in hoursand after hours hospital manager out of hours who is the senior nurse on site however we also have the ICU CNC as well.

Ah ok. In the Uk (I think I am a student but fairly sure) That a ward sister/charge nurse/ward manager/Nurse Unit Managers

They I think have no power over who is emplyed on their ward they are given them, and they have no power to remove bad staff.

That I think is one reason for some of the poor nursing standards in the uk. There is no one in charge of a ward who is able to directly punish and remove bad members of staff.

Oh and ward managers in the uk are only employed 9 to 5.

All the hospitals I worked at in the UK the ward manager/sister had the power to employ who they wanted from interview. There are processes to go through regarding bad staff but like many places you have to prove they are bad.

Ward managers/sisters/charge nurses are still responsible to implement and make sure that nursing standards are up to standard. Does it fail? Sure but nursing always has and I believe always will get bad press when something goes wrong. Nurses always gets the blame.
