Nurse Licensure Compact for COUNTRIES?

Published

While applying for licensure in Virginia, I was surprised to see that Canadian nurses (outside of Quebec) automatically can become RNs in Virginia.

Here's my question: where can U.S. nurses go and immediately start working (assuming they have a visa) without having to take the local version of the NCLEX? Thanks.

Some countries like the UK and Australia you don't need to take local licenses just meet their requirements. Some countries do require a bridging problem if they feel you need it. Other countries like Canada you have to take local exam

I am surprised to read that about Virginia and Canadian trained nurses as my understanding if trained from a certain year then you had to take and sit NCLEX to be able to work in the US Plus foreign nurses to the most have to get visa screen certificate and requirement there is pass in either NCLEX or CGFNS exam

Sorry but you are reading old information. Any foreign nurse wishing to work in the US must possess a Visa Screen Certificate. And the only way to obtain one is to either write the CGFNS exam or the NCLEX-RN exam.

Without a VSC, one is not going to be able to work in the US. What you are speaking of is the reciprocity that used to exist with Canadian licensure and several states in the US, also including Michigan as well as Pennsylvania and quite a few others. But it no longer exists since the requirement of the VSC.

The US has been under the retrogression for more than two years as a start, and the only way that a Canadian can get a visa for the US is with the TN Visa and that requires the VSC as well.

Much was written about this back about four years ago or so when the VSC became mandatory.

Australia does not require an exam, but you have to get thru immigration first. UK does not have an exam either but they have a hiring freeze in place and have had that for sometime.

And if Virginia still has that listed, it jus tells me that they do not update all of their site too often.

Thanks for the info. The Virginia BON site is pretty weak and some of the links are broken.

Does anyone know what a U.S. nurse has to do to work in New Zealand? I know they pay very little, but I'm toying with the idea of going there just for the experience.

There are already threads on here for what will need to be done to work in New Zealand.

Since your questions have been answered, will go ahead and close this thread.

Best of luck to you.
