This summer I will be engaged in a 10 week internship in a MICU and SICU. I am currently finishing my third year towards a BSN.
I'd love to have some input on what kind of basics everyone in the field recommends that I brush up on.
Any tips of the trade?
Advice for a MICU/SICU beginner?
I will have a preceptor with me at all times (at least on paper).
I'm ecstatic to be joining the realm of critical care officially, it is exactly where I am supposed to be... at least for the moment. :heartbeat

Thanks, that was a terrific thread and pertained to my question.
Congratulations on landing the internship.
Let me know if you find a book that you really like.
Thanks again.

Figure out who the respiratory therapists are and make friends. They will teach you so much! Also, try to get your hands on things that you wouldn't normally see in other units. Learn how the vents work and get comfortable with suctioning and oral care. Work with the invasive lines and learn how to zero your art lines, CVP, etc. When there are codes, get in the room and tell them you want to do chest compressions or ventilate with the bag.
Ask a ton of questions! You will love it.
