Welcome to the Nurse Educator Forum. It is my desire that you find this a warm, inviting place and will come here often for friendly, collegial discussions.

Let me introduce myself: I have been an ADN nurse educator in a small community college in North Carolina for the past two years. My areas of specialty are medical-surgical, OBGYN and immediate newborn, and cardiac nursing. In addition to teaching, I conduct clinicals on general medical-surgical, PEDS, postpartum, and cardiac step-down units. Along with being a full time nursing instructor, I am working on my Masters in Nursing Education. I am enrolled in a fully online curricula and have been very satisfied with this so far.

I have learned much these past two years but, I have so much more to learn! I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello everyone!

I am a med-surg instructor at a small community college. I have taught nsg. there for 10 years. Basically I have taught the same content the entire time. I have continued to work part time in different clinics. I have not worked on a regular med surg unit for about four years. What is the thought on instructors working vs. not working?

:) could you please help me with the content of med surg. Is there a manual I can use to help me teach the content without tears?.

New to the academia world of Nursing. How do you measure that you are a great instructor or a good instructor? What strategies do you use to engage adult learners? What are your expectations of the students? What are your expectations? We want to do it all. We are motivated and consider ourselves high achiever. We want students to succeed but at what cost? To complete a nursing program but not able to pass NCLEX. New to the academia world of Nursing.

This pretty much sums up the intense struggles and dilemmas most new nursing educators face. Basically, you must find your own style and niche with teaching. There is no substitute for time and determination. Find a good mentor. Read many quality articles and texts on nursing education and adult education. Usually the first two years are very difficult, but don't become discouraged. Eventually you will develop and refine your own teaching style, one that is learner-center and works best for your situation.

I just finished my 1st semester of teaching ADN students. To seasoned faculty, what did you do for your second semester to engage students? What are you doing today to engage students? Do you use powerpoint? After teaching 2 rotations, I'm not sure if I like powerpoint. I felt confined, restrained. What do you use for lectures? I would like to hear from others- novices to experts.

I'm certainly no "expert" (three years' worth of experience this summer!). There is a rich variety of medium available for use. PowerPoint is fine, but it is definitely over used. This can place the students in a somnolent and passive mode. Interactive learning strategies should be used, no matter what primary medium is used. An example - during the lecture or PowerPoint, break the class up into groups and give a small exercise to complete (10-15 minutes) to apply some of the concepts.

Im starting my MSN program - with concentration in Nursing Education- shortly in a distance education program. I have taught CNAs for 6 years... I want to teach nursing at the college level... And Im thrilled to be starting this program. I started the reading last night and scared myself. There must have been 8 new words on the first PAGE! This is going to be a challenge, but I am excited... tell me about your program and your students? It may be the same one... St Joseph's?

I started my MSN program through St. Joseph's with an independent study course in Nursing Theory, and then finished this May at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. I have been teaching CNAs since 1994 and nursing students since 1997. I really enjoy this, but I need full-time, and it is hard when I can't relocate due to family obligations. I cried the first time I read my first assignment, but I persevered with alot of TLC and finished with 4.0. The program at Clarke was wonderful. I wasn't comfortable with the computer when I started, now I can run a computer as if I was raised on it. It is a fascinating field. Good Luck and hang in there! PegRN55

Hi; Glad to have another Renal Educator to chat with.

i teach for a large hospital in Central California; and have a very good idea ofwhat your doing. I was running a PD Unit at another hospital as I was doing the Master's thing; what a treat. That was 12 years ago but worth every minute. When you get done I'd love to work with somebody to develop a research paper about The extremely high numbers of our population with ESRD; especially those who do a lot of the field work arround here and also have no concept about diabetes. I'm sure there is a direct corelation between lack of health services; high heat and exposure to agriculture chemicals since about 60 % of our population is migrant labor. They have a very special need since we have whole families with some stage of CKD.

Take care and good luck in school. shelgh

Hello there,

Glad to find this site!

I'm currently working as a nurse educator at a hospital based dialysis unit here in San Francisco. My 20 year in nursing has been in critical care, acute and chronic hemodialysis, pediatric dialysis, apheresis, management, and now education. Worked as an educator for a medical equipment company---but the corporate mentality wasn't for me.

Was recently accepted to graduate school. Will start in September on my MSN with an education specialty. If I stay motivated, I would love to get my PhD as there certainly appears to be the need.

Have enjoyed reading the different threads, primarily around the (seemingly reduced) caliber / motivation of many of our newer nurses. I can relate!!

Look forward to the networking!

Thanks

:) hOW ARE YOU FINDING THE PROGRAM AT wALDEN? please tell me about Nurs 6100. Have you completed the course yet?

Conqueror,

I am in the fifth week of the NURS 6100 course, right now, at Walden University. Each class is broken into 8 week segments. Each week has three distinct areas: Learning Resources (reading assignments and dvd's), Discussion (posting and replying to classmates in a threaded discussion forum), and application (homework - generally writing papers). All posts must be done by Wednesday so that all replies can be completed by Sunday. Any homework must be done by Sunday, as well.

The actual catalog description of NURS 6100 (Understanding Health Care Systems) is as follows: "This course provides a critical analysis of economic, sociological, and political factors that affect the nursing and health care delivery systems. U.S. health policies that impact access, quality, costs, delivery systems, professional practices, and reform are discussed. Current issues and concerns related to health care financing and payment systems are explored. Course assignments focus on nursing practice applications."

The class is really more challenging than I expected it to be but I think that I can attribute it to this new learning style (I've never taken online classes before). For me, the most difficult part is posting every week regarding a specific topic. For example, this past week our topic of discussion was the difference between public and private policy. Our posting assignment was to identify a public policy that affects our practice on the local level. I have included a copy of our actual assignment below for your review. Please feel free to ask any other questions that you may have.

----------------------------

Our actual assignment was as follows:

Consider this information from a personal perspective by focusing on one public policy that is having an impact on you at the local level:

  • What is the policy and where was it initiated?
  • Which driver was this policy designed to address: access, cost, or quality? In your experience/opinion, how would you assess its effectiveness in doing so? Why?
  • What have been the effects (adverse or positive) of this policy on the other two drivers?
  • How is this policy affecting your role as a nurse? Your organization? The level of service you provide?

Next, consider a different issue--something you care personally about, or see or experience on a daily basis--about which you would like to influence a change of policy.

With this in mind:

  • Post a description of a public policy that is having an impact on you at the local level. In your description, address the bulleted questions above.

Then expand your posting by describing an issue about which you would like to influence a change of policy. Very briefly explain why you are concerned about this issue and what you would like to see changed.
  • Read a selection of your colleagues' postings, looking for situations about which you have questions and/or for which you can offer helpful insights from your own practice or experiences.
  • Respond to at least two of your colleagues' postings in one or more of the following suggested ways:
    • Suggest why you might see things differently
    • Ask a probing or clarifying question
    • Share an insight from having read the colleague's posting
    • Offer and support an opinion
    • Validate an idea with your own experience
    • Expand on the colleague's posting

[*]Review your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have had as a result of the comments made by your colleagues. Also consider how your insights/learnings might impact your future actions.

Reminder: Be sure to support your postings with appropriate references to the Learning Resources. If you use sources other than the course Learning Resources, please follow APA (American Psychological Association) guidelines and provide a proper citation and reference for each source. Refer to the APA Publication Manual, sent to you with the materials for this course.
