2015 Nurse Corps Scholarship

Published

Hi All! I just submitted my application for the 2015 Nurse Corps Scholarship program. Wondering from those with experience with this program, how strong do you feel your essays were? I wrote mine on my second 20 hour work day in a row, I went back and tweaked them after I was able to get a little sleep, but I don't know that they were the strongest. I couldn't find past essays to compare them to. Were your essays written from personal experience or fact based? I also have a 3.0 GPA which judging from past score cards will not get me any points in the GPA review area. Do they also take into account your work status? I am employeed full time and for going to nursing school, working full time, and raising a five year old, I feel like that is pretty darn good! Like everyone else that applies, I need this scholarship. I am not sure I will be able to afford school much longer and will have to go back to sitting on the waitlist at a tech school. I was supposed to start clinicals this summer semster, but my employer was unwilling to work around my school schedule so I was able. I am applying for different jobs, but nothing seems to be happening quick enough so now I am worried I will also be unable to start clinicals in fall. If I were to receive this scholarship it would allow me to go part time and get school done. I have an EFC of 0 and I know they start with this group first. Does anyone know where to find numbers on how many of those who fall within this bracket seeking an ADN are chosen?

My essays were mostly from my personal experience, as I believe the prompts asked for things like why I am interested in working with specific populations. I wrote about my awareness of people with varying SES status, and the challenges unique to those with less. I wrote about how my awareness and empathy for people in this group stems from my parents being first generation American citizens and growing up on the border of Mexico, experiencing a lot of adversity. I also wrote about my experience doing an internship with a public health institute (SDSU, I wasn't a student, I got the internship while I was doing nursing pre req's at the local city college) conducting a pilot study to get people in a low income community to eat healthier. Stuff like that.

Honestly I am not sure what all levels of experience the nurse corps scholars have had in the past. It seems a little unclear what the criteria is and what it may be based on. I assume they want to choose people they feel are committed to fulfilling the work commitment/obligations, but how they determine that I am unsure. Good luck and I hope you get the scholarship!

I have no idea how strong my essays were. I can tell you that they were grammatically correct!

It's a waiting game. No idea how they pick the candidates. Eenie, meeny, miney, mo?

From reading past discussions here, I think people start to hear that they were accepted in August. But you could hear much later than that, all the way up to September 30th. I think if you are not accepted you hear September 30th. So, I'm only going to start freaking out in August. freaking out is not allowed until August at the earliest. my EFC is 0 and my GPA is 4. O from my last school. I also have a bachelor's degree, & I am going for an accelerated BSN.

Hi!! I'm also getting nervous about this scholarship. Its my only hope for going to school this fall, everything is up in the air until I hear back from HRSA. I was trying to find out when we will hear who the finalist are so I can know what steps I should take for planning. I also have a Bachelor's degree and starting an accelerated program.
