Hi all,
I am a nurse practitioner with nursing experience primarily in ICU and did travel nursing, charge nurse, and preceptor. I now primarily work in telehealth, have started my own telehealth company, and am an adjunct faculty at a nursing school in Atlanta, which I love.
I have noticed that the nursing schools often tell students that they have to work in a general med surg unit out of school. I have one student who really wants to do that but others who are interested in other specialties but are unsure of their options and/or scared it could negatively impact their futures.
I have been considering doing career coaching to help new nurses navigate which specialty they want to be in and the best plan to prepare them to apply for school if that's something they want to pursue. There are so many different avenues that you can pursue as a nurse and I don't see nursing schools highlighting that.
Would love to get any feedback from student nurses, new grads, seasoned nurses, etc. if this could be something that would potentially help. I've seen statistics saying that around 17% of nurses leave their first job within a year and over 50% leave after two years.
I just wonder if that's because new nurses don't know what options they have. Anyway, would love to hear any feedback. I've been contemplating the idea for a while but am interested to know opinions. Thanks!

I think that a nurse career coach would be useful. There are several posts from members that are interested in specialties but have trouble obtaining a position, or worried about messing up careers.
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I was reading through a lot of blogs and posts and could see a need for something like this. I just kind of got stuck on where to find people willing to pay for these services. While there is an upfront cost, I believe it would definitely be worth it to get on the right track at the beginning of a career instead of getting stuck in a specialty that they may not like right out of school. Anyway, I really appreciate your feedback about this! Planning to keep plugging away at the idea!

I would love career counseling. I am still applying for nursing programs however, not a nurse yet. California's schools are so impacted. I need in navigating my education. I have a non-nursing degree, am older and don't have time to make the mistakes you've highlighted.
@estardust I'd be happy to talk with you more about this! It can definitely be confusing but it doesn't have to be. Let me know how I can help!
