Nurse Auditors

Nurses General Nursing

Are there any nurses out there that are working as medical bill auditors for a hospital or company? I came out of retirement and I am working part time for a company that the local hospital contracts with to perform medical bill auditing. I am new at this and would like to know if there are other nurses in this field that could be a resource for me to tap into for some help and direction in becoming more knowledgable and proficient in this job.

Thanks

I can't help you...sorry....but that's an interesting concept for a part-time job. I was looking for something just a few hours a week to supplement another part-time job. How did you find that job? What is it called? I'll be interested to see what responses you get. Hope you find some experienced people!

Thanks for responsing Rainydayrn. Found this job in my local paper, interviewed & got it. One week of training (not enough). There are positions out there. Careerbuilder.com. Most full time. Training seminars or resource material virtually nonexsistent. Does make for a good part time opportunity.

I have conducted both retrospective as well as concurrent audits of hospital, lab and physician bills. We looked for nurses who had a varied background in nursing. We used Medicare's DRG's as a bases for our reviews but also relied on a factual observation of the entire patient record, of the bill under review. We did them mainly for insurance companies. Depending on the size of the bill, we generally found any where from several hundred dollars to thousands of dollars in 'errors'. We negotiated with the facility for a reduction in the final bill or a repayment of a retrospective aduit.
