Nurse Aide.... But Not

Published

I am looking for a second job because my job now only has 2 twelve hour shifts... noon to midnight and midnight to noon. I work in a group home with MRDD individuals. So with school it is impossible to get hours during the week. I work Fridays and everyother Saturday and Sunday.

AND LISA IS BROKE!

So a hospital close to me trains you to be a nurse tech/aide BUT you arent trained to take the certification test. Just to work for them.

Should I do this? I could maybe squeeze in every other weekend and one or two days a week. I am just scared I will get overwhelmed.

what would you do??

If you can't stand the sight of feces, honestly you might not be CNA material. Typically CNAs deal MUCH LESS with blood, and much more with poop and pee. Changing briefs and wiping butts is a huge part of the CNA's job.

Wow! I think you are right. Thanks for the advise :jester:

You might look into being an MA (Medical Assistant) instead...it's still an entry into the medical field. Training generally takes longer, but you'd be assisting more with medical procedures, and typically less with poop.

I will say, though, that I was concerned with dealing with dirty briefs and wiping butts when I first started, and really, it isn't as bad as you expect it to be!

Good luck. :)

I think that you should take the CNA course and obtain the certification. Certification in anything opens more doors to you, including to the hospital with their additional training. When I was a developmental aide at a facility of the mentally retarded, I also administered oral medications. It is not the same as being a nurse, however, it is good practice if, in case you should decide later on to become a nurse.

I have a similar problem with the aide but not an assistant thing. I work for an ICF and its designed for clients with DD and MR. I can pass meds through the "special" training. At work my title is Authorised Direct Service Person, but on the states department of public health webpage it shows that I am on the registry as a DD-aide. But next to employment is says (CNA) active. I went through training work said I was on the registry as a Certified Nurses Aid for DD. I dont know if im a Certified Nurses Assistant if I leave. Anyone?

Not sure, but from what I know, if you have not taken the state test to certify you to be a CNA, then, you may not be a certified nursing assistant. I would check the state board of nursing to inquire.
