NROTC! Help!

i really want to join the navy nurse corps, but im not quite sure as to how to get there and which is the best path for me. im taking pre-reqs at a community college in california planning on transfering after i finish. currently i have been really considering going into a nrotc program at a university, (which university? i have no idea lol) so i just have a couple questions about it.

1. this is what the navy's website says:

"naval reserve officers training corps (nrotc): apply for this competitive scholarship program before attending college. you can fill out an online application at https://www.nrotc.navy.mil/apply.aspx . if you are awarded a scholarship, you can choose from a participating college and take a normal course load. graduate and be commissioned as an officer in the u.s. navy."

so, my question is, (see underlined bold) if i got the scholarship i could pick any college and just get in, skipping the entire applying/admission part for the college? or do i still have to apply to the school after i win the scholarship?

2. if i dont get the scholarship, but still go ahead and join nrotc, can i still do the nurse commisioned program? or would i have to choose between nrotc (pay for college myself) or nurse candidate program?

3. i want to be a navy nurse commisioned officer, so if i get into a nrotc program choosing nursing as a major, does that automatically put me into a nursing program at the college? (sorry, that may seem like a stupid question, but i'm so confused my head is spinning. )

4. okay lets say that i get accepted into a university and the nrotc program but i dont get accepted into the nursing program there, what would happen?

5. how hard is it to get accepted into the nrotc program?

6. do you have to get the scholarship inorder to be in the nrotc program?

7. as you know i would be a transfer student from a california community college. okay so lets say im applying to university of utah, i want to be in the nrotc program and the nursing program. when i'm doing the application for the university, is there a box i check for "nrotc and nursing program"? is it like i would get in "all-or-nothing"?? (like i would get into the nrotc program and the nursing program, or none at all if i didnt qualify for one of the programs) does that make sense???? erggg

haha im sure alot of those questions are dumb, but any help would be great.

thanks in advance! any information would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!!!!!!!!

You have to be accepted to the university as part of your application to ROTC. You can do ROTC without the Navy paying for your school. And you have to apply to the nursing school AFTER you're accepted into the university and complete the prereqs (usually).

ROTC has one mission - train an officer. They have nothing to do with whether you're accepted by your chosen major or not. They have nothing to do with whether you're accepted by the university or not.

It's possible to be accepted to ROTC and not your chosen major, and it's possible to be accepted by your chosen major and NOT by ROTC (that's what happened to me during my third attempt at a commission back in 2002 - they took me at UT but not in AFROTC).

Best source of information? A NROTC cadre at your chosen university (I'm using an AF/Army term here; I don't know what the Navy calls their ROTC units).

I believe you must be admitted to a nursing program to be eligible for a nursing NROTC scholarship. To receive a 4yr scholarship you can not have more than i believe 30 hrs of college credit. If you have more hrs than that you can try to gain a scholarship for remaining years once you are attending a school that has a NROTC program. My son is trying at get a "regular" not nursing scholarship this year and I'll I will say is that the difficulty in getting one this year is high.

Thanks everyone!
