Dear Nurse Beth,
I am an NP and have been practicing for 3 yrs in ambulatory settings, mostly doing women's health. Before this, I worked in the corporate world for 6 yrs. I am now looking to transition to a more administrative role within healthcare but am finding it incredibly hard to do! I feel like every recruiter is confused by my background and I can't get an interview! Any advice?
Dear NP,
It can be hard when you are making a significant career change and trying to land your first opportunity.
Many times in healthcare nurses advance up the ladder to administration through progressive leadership roles. They don't necessarily start in administration.
You sound surprised, but from an employer's point of view, your path has been clinical, and your skills as an NP don't directly translate to an administrative role. It's also possible that employers fear you'll go back to a clinical position with your credentials.
Narrow down what kind of administrative job you are looking for and register on Indeed.com. Let your contacts know you are looking for a change and activate your network.
Best wishes,
Nurse Beth
