NP License in California by endorsement question.. Please, please help!

Published

Hi all! I am applying for NP license in CA. I already have an NP license in another state and already certified by AANP. California have requested the Verification of NP certification and they have a form to be filled out by AANP. When I look at the AANP website, they provide State Board of Nursing Notification Form that send out my certification status as well. Do I email them and ask them to complete the form by California's as well as request them to notify my status? Or the official AANP form notifying my status sent to the CA Board is suffice?

Also, for the academic program verification, does that have to be sealed like transcript? I was wondering if I can have my school complete that form and I'll just mail it out on my own since it's less hassle.

Anybody that has done this before please, please help. California's NP application is much harder than my state.

I am a new grad, moving due to my family's job. I really appreciate any recommendation or advise you can provide about this CA licensing process.

Thank you soo much!

The official AANP form would suffice. I personally don't even know if ANCC filled out the California form I sent them other than the fact that the postal service communication occurred between the BRN and ANCC so I wasn't involved at all.

You could send the school form yourself if you want to expedite the process.  The instructions do not say it has to be sealed like a transcript.  I didn't do that but I got an email from the Program Director about the form and that she sent it back to California.  The director has my email because I precepted students at the school.

Expect long processing and delay with California.

Thank you so much for your reply Juan! One more question if you don't mind, do you know if the Controlled Substance II course is required to get the furnishing license? From what I read in the BRN, it said no but some people told me yes. So I am a little confused. I plan to do it but since I applied California RN and NP license at the same time, I don't have RN license number yet. CANP required me to put in RN license number.

Thank you for all your help! I read on your other posts too and it's very helpful. It's very kind of you to set aside time and helping others with the process. ?

You don't need the controlled substance course to get a Furnishing License.  However, for the Furnishing License to enable to you to also prescribe controlled substances, you have to show proof that your program included the content in your pharmacology course or you have to to take the course (CANP offers it).

Thank you so much!

This illustrates how frustrating government can be (especially in California). Literally, every NP Program in the United States that leads to board certification requires an advanced pharmacology, physiology,  and advanced health assessment before one can even sit to take the exam in their specialty area. This has been the case since the consensus model was implemented almost ten years ago.  Why now just require proof of board certification?

It's a highly regulated state riddled with tons of beaurocratic red tape.  Most other states have the prescriptive authority built in to the NP license but not California where we have an NP license and a NP Furnishing license.  But just you wait til we start implementating AB-890 the NP "independence" bill that was butchered to useless shreds during months of deliberations...good luck figuring out who is designated an independent NP and who's not.

Hi!

Can a Psychiatric nurse practitioner practice independently? Do we need first the RN endorsed then the NP license? I am new in the process...Can't figure out if they want the RN license first or they endorse the APN...I am licensed in Texas, intending to move to get California Psych Nurse Practitioner license as well. Thanks!

I am not licensed in California, but here is my understanding of the process:

a.  In all states you will start with an RN license. California is not a compact state and the process for gaining your license is a pain in the butt. They will want transcripts from your school and perhaps NCLEX results. You can get a temp license I believe good for up to six months. You will need Lexiscan preferably performed in California.

b. California is not IP and I believe MD's are limited to 4 NP's that they can collaborate with.

c. After you get your RN you can apply for your NP (perhaps at the same time, not really certain on this.).

d. You will also need to apply and pay for a "furnishing license" in order to apply for your DEA.

e. Then you will have to either transfer your DEA or spend the approximately $800.00 for a new DEA license.

The upside is that the hassle of obtaining an NP license in California creates decent job demand and the high cost of living leads to some of the best pay (You do have a state income tax that exceeds about 10% so there is that).  Perhaps if you lived in a "relatively" low cost of living area like Bakersfield or Fresno, or Sacramento you could optimize the pay to cost of living variables.

You can apply to both RN, NP, and NPF licenses at the same time.  California does its own evaluation of credentials and it takes longer than other states.  For out of state license endorsement to California, you will need confirmation of ANCC certification, proof of BON registration from home state, forms filled out by your school, DEA certificate, and proof of having completed a course on prescribing schedule medications in you NP Program.  All instructions are on the Board of Registered Nursing website.
