Notifying supervisor of job application

Where I work, notifications of current supervisors when applying for another job within the organization is addressed in our policy manual. I think this really helps to avoid sticky situations.

Yes. Because the grapevine will notify your boss as soon as you turn in your application. I've transfered three times to get different experiences within the same hospital the last 15 years.

Our policy and procedure states that my current supervisor will be contacted for a reference if I am a finalist for the position. The organization is quite large, so I don't know how much of a "grapevine" exists between HR and my managers (they work in completely separate buildings). However, working nights does insulate me from the typical goings-on of administration, so I guess that it's better to be safe than sorry. I think that I will prepare a letter tonight and send it off just after I turn in my application.

I am applying to a job within the same organization where I am currently employed. Should I notify my supervisor and manager in advance that I am applying for this new position? I have repeatedly asked for a more workable schedule and/or to switch shifts, but to no avail. On the one hand I do not want to have to deal with questions about why I want to leave, but I also do not want my supervisor to find out second-hand that I applied for this new position as that might create some hard feelings.

I have also applied for some jobs outside the organization, and in that case I asked that they not contact my current employer until after a job offer is made (per the good advice of people on this board- Thanks!)

I am not sure how long you've been with the organization. How is your annual performance review in this unit? If its favorable then you should have nothing to worry even applying outside if they verify your employment as well as inside there are only certain information that the HR are allowed to disclosed on employment verification issues and if you are doing good with that company you should be proud to tell them go ahead verify my employment it has been also a practice of most companies that an employee are not rectricted in applying to another department within the organization but there are certain requirements/standards to follow depending of what is their policy on transferring to another department. Assuming you adhere to those requirements and you are qualified for that position and you are a good employee dont be afraid. Your supervisor or your Manager is expected that they will be informed and asked how is your performance in that unit by the receiving department before they will make any decision in addition to other factors considered. What was the reason behind why they are not granting your request? They might have a good reason behind why they are denying you as much as you do.Is it reasonable as well as yours? Proper and Open communication is imperative on both sides on issues like this. Good luck I wish you the best

Thank you for your reply. I have been with the organization for six months and as such have only had preliminary performance reviews. However, my organization allows transfers to other departments after six months in a position. There are no positions on days (and will not be for at least a year) because of projected census and budget considerations. Therefore, my manager stated that I would not be able to transfer to days until at least August of 2008, if not later. When I was initially hired, an expansion of our unit was projected with the need for additional staff on days as of this summer. Because I work hard and have received favorable reviews, I suspect that my manager would transfer me to days if she were able to do so. I am on very good terms with her, have never gotten written up, and was only out sick on two occasions (for one shift each) in the past six months.
