Not sure what to do

Published

Hey everyone!

Just looking for some words of encouragement or guidance... I currently work on an extremely busy LDR floor and have for the last 7 years thru that I have found a new intrest in the Or and woulld like to try out the field...

I interviewed for a position that only does scheduled cases and the hours would be mon thru fri 7-3 no holodays

I currently work 7 am-1900 3 days a week with rotating weekends and 1 8 hr call shift a pay period...

My question is has anyone switched from 12 shifts to 8 hr shifts and was it a huge adjustment.. I am looking for something that is more family friendly and am just anxious about making right decisiin

Im in the same position. I work 3 12's and the OR gigs I am looking at are 5 8's. Honestly, I don't mind the 8 hour shifts. 12 hours is a long time to work.

I worked 8 hours shifts before I got into nursing and I didn't mind them. I don't think it will be a big adjustment for me. For others it may be a big adjustment. Really just depends on the person. It is nice not to have to work holidays or weekends (in some cases). That's the trade off IMO.

I went from a rotating day / night shift position working three 12 hour shifts to five 8 hour shifts when I started in the OR. I like being out at 1530, it was nice to have some evening time free. When I got off orientation I went to four 10 hour shifts. I like 10s, it's the right combination. I still get a day "off", but I don't have to potentially do three twelves in a row. We have some variable shifts and are trialing 12s again, but we're a level 1 trauma center.

It's an adjustment, just requires a different kind of planning. You'll have to put some more thought into scheduling appointments and requesting time off to cover that. But it's not all bad.

Thanks for the feedback i decided to take the leap and try something new looking forward to learning and experencing new things... the nice thing is where i accepted my job only does scheduled cases so i wont have to worry about unexpected emergency cases that pop up... I think they are eventually going to go to 10s which would be the perfect schedule!
