Not sure what to do. Licensed RN working as tech.

Nurses New Nurse

Long story short, I got a job as a tech at a hospital during nursing school for the sole purpose of working there as an RN once I graduated. Well I got written up earlier this year which prevented me from doing the new RN grad program (I applied in jan but got written up in march). I had to wait six months before I could transfer or do anything. Well fast forward to this month, I get my RN license and my six month "probation" is up. I figure I'd start orienting as an RN but apparently that's not the case. I was told I would still have to work as an aide and wait for a position that I qualify for to show up. Thing is that the GN positions only pop up once a year and all the other postings I need exp. and certs. for.

So, now I'm losing skills and knowledge. I have started applying outside the hospitals to LTC (which is the last thing I wanted to do). I feel unsupported by my manager and I don't know who in the hospital I can talk to. I've already talked to the HR director as well as my manager. The only thing I can think of is talking to them again about this issue, seek out other floors in the hospital for a position or going over their heads.

Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

Hi there. I am reading the OP and these replies with a raised eyebrow...because I was under the impression that legally one is held to the highest standard of their training and licensure. In other words, once you pass your boards, you function as a nurse. Period. The nurse practice act requires you to respond to situations as you have been trained. And how ridiculous is the facility's assumption that you can just forget what you have learned and not respond as a nurse?

In most facilities I have worked in, once a tech or aide passes their RN boards they are either hired as a nurse or let go. I have been assigned to float or fill in occasionally as a aide or sitter, but my pay and signature on any charting I did was as an RN. I am curious how they rationalize all this.

If it takes you getting fired to get your point and feelings across, then so be it?

Oh dear! So much energy wasted trying to get someone who doesn't CARE about your point or feelings to validate your point and feelings. Not only that, getting fired has a way of coming back on you when you least expect it. The nursing community is a small and gossipy one. New employers may hear that you were fired even if you don't put that facility on your resume. Please don't shoot yourself in the foot before you even get out of the gate!

It's a rare thing to find an employer who will genuinely care about you as a human being. As a new grad, you're a time and money sucking vortex to the company. If they wanted to make the investment, they would've communicated that to you. They'll be perfectly happy to continue using you as a tech for as long as you allow that.

I would leave. Sorry to be blunt, but they don't want you. Go elsewhere( don't be picky either) and start with a clean slate.
