Dear Nurse Beth,

I have 8 years diploma certificate and a year Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I am currently working as an emergency nurse in an MOH facility in Saudi Arabia. I have been classified as nurse technician instead of a nurse specialist. Do nurse technicians sit for SNLE or NTECH? What should I do about it please?

Dear What to Do,

The classification and eligibility for nursing licensure exams varies from country to country and even within different regions or healthcare facilities.

In Saudi Arabia, nursing classifications are determined by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS).

The classification can vary between "nurse technicians" and "nurse specialists," and the eligibility to sit for licensure exams like the Saudi Nursing Licensure Exam (SNLE) (for nurse specialists) or Nursing Technician Exam (NTECH) (for nurse technicians),  depends on your qualifications and experience.

Here are some steps you can take to address your situation:

note: In the meantime, ask to see the job description for both nurse technician and nurse specialist to see the difference in scope of practice. Be sure to adhere to the scope of practice of your job description.

Contact SCFHS Contact the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties directly for your specific status. They can provide information on the classification criteria, eligibility for licensure exams, and any steps you need to take to change your classification if necessary.

Documentation Ensure you have all the necessary documentation and qualifications. This may include your diploma certificate, Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, transcripts, and additional credentials.

Request a Review If you believe your classification as a nurse technician is incorrect, request a review or reclassification through the appropriate channels within your healthcare facility or SCFHS. Be prepared to provide evidence of your qualifications and experience.

Discuss with Your Employer Speak with your employer or HR department about your classification and express your desire to be recognized as a nurse specialist. They may be able to guide you through the process or advocate on your behalf.

Seek Professional Advice Consider seeking advice from a professional association or organization of nurses in Saudi Arabia. They may be able to provide guidance and support in navigating the classification and licensure process.

Prepare for Licensure Exams Depending on the outcome of your classification review; you may need to prepare for and take the appropriate licensure exam, whether the Saudi Nursing Licensure Exam (SNLE) or another exam that aligns with your classification.

Stay Informed on changes in licensure requirements and classification criteria in Saudi Arabia. Regulations and policies can change over time.

The key is to work closely with the relevant authorities, your employer, and any professional organizations to ensure that your qualifications are properly recognized and that you can sit for the appropriate licensure exam. Remember that the specific process and requirements can vary, so seeking guidance and clarification from the right sources is essential.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth

Hi!

I'm planning to move to KSA to work as an NP and I have applied for a specialist license. I am being requested to do an evaluation interview virtually? Anyone have any insight to what it is and what to expect, I'll be very grateful!

Thank you!
