Not Qualified?

I have applied for a supervisor position that I do not possess the specific qualifications for. I did so at the suggestion of other administrative nurses who say I would be great for the position. (The job requires critical care experience which I have six months at the most.) My boss encouraged me by saying, "many professionals apply for and are hired for a position that they do not possess the qualifications for". Is this true?? 

Also, how do I "wow" in the interview. I do have leadership experience and I know that I would be at this job.
