Not liking my profession, is there anything else I can get into?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hey guys, I am currently an LVN at a subacute and rehab facility. So far I am not liking it. Very stressful, getting the medication passed on time, charting, dealing with demanding patients and families, etc. and having to put up with some rude philipino and indian nurses. So far they had me look like an idiot, having me do things purposely to get in trouble or just plain rude, pushing me out of the way or grabbing papers out of my hands. Im young and new but unfortunately its like that everywhere, if your not of their race, they dont help or like you. Well maybe not everywhere but definitely the places ive worked at. So, is there anything you guys might know of that i can get into? I know so far that I can get certified as an MDS coordinator or Ive seem some staff developers that are lvns but how do they get there? Its something i went to school for and have to stick with it, but i know i can get something good out of it. I live in california so any help will be appreciated greatly!

A lot of that is simply the culture. I worked w an Indian doctor who was very rude and made everyone want to punch a wall after dealing with him. There was a nurse who worked w us who was also Indian and had the same manner. When he was rude to her, she just gave it back to him the same way and they worked together quite well because neither one of them were offended.

That said, are you able to get out of where you are? I do home health and I found it to be an oasis of peace from the rehab/SNF facility I had come from. Usually home health agencies want at least a year experience, it doesn't sound like you've been at this place long. Try to stick with it to get a year's experience. You will be surprised how much easier it gets after about 6 months. I know that's hard to face, but it'll be the best education you get, even better than nursing school. Good luck!

I worked LTC, SNF, Rehab for a really nice facility. There were cultural cliks and I was an outsider, it took a while to get them to accept me. That aside, LTC was just not for me I found homecare to be great and enjoyed it very much. One on one patient care worked well for me and kept me busy enough. Homecare is not a cake job but there is a lot less stress.

There is so much racism and discrimination in the nursing profession. I've never encountered so much negativity in my life. I never thought such hate and ignorance would still exists in such a profession. Having a good education doesn't means your a decent human being. Sometimes your just an educated fool! Hope your lucky enough to find a job where you don't have to deal with such idiots, unfortunately there seems to be an abundance of them is this so-called profession. GOOD LUCK!
