So it was a busy night at the hospital where I was working:chair: . My floor, well...we hung enough blood to make a group of vampires so very full and happy ...LOL! Only one CNA for 30 beds, and lots of very needy patients. It was just crazy, so I helped a fellow nurse out with his patient since he has so many blood products and procedures to do .
Now his patient was a very severely demented and aggressive patient...but I had worked with him before and basically just had to keep him in bed, and give him his last set of medications for the night. He was incontinent and so I changed him and made up his bed. Then a few minutes later I heard him call out for help...I went to the patient who could not really verbalize what type of pain or where, but I knew by his face and body position he was in pain. I got him laid down in bed with support pillows at his back and hips, got him his medications, which included anti-anxiety and pain meds routine. Then I talked with him for a while holding. He calmed right down and started to dose off:sleep:.
But just about then, when I was going to leave he looked at me and said 'help'...and took my hand and put it on his member . I immediately thought "oh, he must have pain on urination, he might have a UTI". So I asked him "Is this hurting? Does it hurt to pee? "
With the most firm and clear voice, and a smile on his face he said "nooooooooo" and giggled! Oh My Gosh, he...umm, well...guess wanted something not ordered by any Doctor I know of, and certainly not covered by his HMO! LOL! :imbar
I very kindly moved his hand off mine and got my hand free, and told him "now, I know your wife wouldn't appreciate this, and I certainly know my husband won't". He giggled again! "if you need that type of treatment you may need to do this yourself, and I can provide you with privacy." I left the room after giving him a fresh sheet to cover himself, got him a towel...and left it by his bedside and provided him with privacy by shutting the door, but he is a big fall risk so I had to keep the window blinds open (I would have left some KY but he is demented and may have eaten it or something) .
Then I was giggling! I told the male nurse about his patient and he laughed so hard, and said "he has never done that to me?!?!" and I said "well sweetie, you may not be his type! LOL!":roll . The charge nurses and the patients MD got a big red faced giggle out of it, and we formulated a plan in his care plan that would accommodate for this (not nurses providing the treatment, more like privacy and his wife! LOL!) and warn staff that this may occur.
It occurred to me that other people may not be as understanding as I was about it. It would have been a different story if he had been forceful or what not, but he was gentle and I think really just needed that type of "treatment" since it was day 70 in hospital without an outlet for that type of activity. (He is married to a gorgeous woman 20 years younger than him, so that kind of tells me that type of activity may be a very important part of his home life;) ...he just recently became demented after a surgery). I mean that kind of situation is very uncomfortable and very upsetting to many...but I think I handled it well (heck, if I had raised my voice I would have triggered the aggression of his dementia and probably got hit! ).
What kinds of odd situations have you all had to get out of with about as much tact as an ambassador at the UN? LOL! Share your stories!!!!
